A partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation
A hidden gem of West Seattle, Camp Long has inspired generations of scientists, climbers and explorers. With 64 acres of trees and trails, learning opportunities can be found around every corner. Your little scientist will explore magnificent forests full of hidden cedar groves, towering conifers, and colorful salal and huckleberries. They will search Polliwog Pond for salamanders and hidden treasures, filling collection kits and using hand lenses for up-close examination. In their outdoor classroom, your child will build with blocks, logs, and found objects. They will create art from natural materials or with the paints, brushes, and art supplies close at hand. In the mulch or sand pit they will build burrows and caves. Or they might joyfully run with friends to the stump top stage for dramatic play and imagination building. With an additional bonus classroom space located deeper in the forest, your little one will gain experience with fort building and word working – learning how to tie ropes and use tools such as hammers and wood drills (safely supervised).
Also unique to this park are the many opportunities to climb and clamber over rock formations (safely supervised), playing like the great mountaineers of old (trivia point: the famous mountaineers Fred Becky and Jim Wittaker both learned to climb at Camp Long’s Schurman Rock). The wildlife viewing is also spectacular, with resident owls, salamander hunting, and a family of deer that lives in the park.
Throughout all of these adventures your preschooler will engage with symbols, letters and ideas and conduct their own experiments – testing the logic and possibilities of the natural world. Kindergarten readiness skills are woven into your child’s play through the use of the evidence based HighScope curriculum. With an attentive adult close at hand, you child will engage with books, hear stories, and play with letters and language to make words and form ideas. They will play with quantities and numbers, and learn the relationship between symbols and ideas. And in a forest laboratory they will develop curiosity, creativity, and grit through hands on science and play in the great outdoors. Recognizing how popular this location is for West Seattle families, we have created two separate classrooms in the park with space for 64 children a day. Classes are September to June to make space for the all of the summer camps that call Camp Long home.
For your convenience as an adult this classroom is a 10 minute walk from the #21 express bus to downtown Seattle.
